Does True Love Really Exist ?

Nowadays ( hoy  en día)  it seems  like true love belongs (pertenece) more  to fairy tales than to real life. At least (al menos)  in the Western world, there seem to be more couples falling out of love and divorcing than couples feeling as passionat and loving as in the first day. Some scientists say romantic love is a cultural product and that humans are not wired (están programados)  to be in love for too long, the ultimate purpose (propósito)  of such an intense feeling being to reproduce the species. However (sin embargo) , this utterly (completamente)  unromantic interpretation doesn’t explain why there are couples who remain in love for decades. So what is the secret ? Psychologist Robert Sternberg proposed that love is the result of three components: intimacy, passion and commitment (compromiso). Love is strongest when all three of them are strong, but it takes continual work and patience  to keep the balance.

Did you know ?

Ancient Greeks had five different words for love: Agape is pure love (for example in the Bible  the kind of love Jesus has for his Father and his followers) ; Eros is passionate love with sensual desire; Philia is love for friends and family; Storge is natural affection and Xenia means hospitality, the friendship formed between a host and his guest.
