Are You a Night Owl ?

A "night owl" literalmente una lechuza  nocturna es una expresión idiomática inglesa que se utiliza para describir a aquellas personas que prefieren estar despiertas y activas durante la noche. En este post descubriremos en qué país encontramos más "aves nocturnas" y quiénes son los más dormilones.

  According to a survey by TV ratings giant Nielsen Media Research, the biggest night owls on the planet are the Portuguese. Three-quarters of them don’t go to bed until after midnight. The people in Taiwan are almost as bad: 69 percent are still up after midnight, followed by South Koreans (68 percent), Hong Kong residents (66 percent), Spanish (65 percent), Japanese (60 percent), Singapore residents and Malaysians (tied (empataron)  at 54 percent), Thais (43 percent) and finally the Italians at 39 percent.

Before Thomas Edison invented the light bulb in 1879, Americans slept an average of 10 hours a night. Now they’re down to 6.9 hours on weeknights and 7.5 hours on weekends. After comparing complexities of rising and retiring times, the researchers found that the Japanese were the most sleep-deprived of all, with 41 percent getting six hours or less of shut-eye each night.The biggest snoozers  on Earth? The Australians, with 31 percent of them  catching nine hours or more of sleep each night.

What to eat in London

With 6,500 restaurants in London, you can eat food from anywhere in the world, and if you have the cash, enjoy some of the most exclusive dining experiences. But what do Londoner’s really eat every day? It is true that people live on beer, roast beef and bacon and eggs? Let’s discover, in this post, what a typical person living and working in London eats, and what a visitor will expect to find.

 Big Breakfast

Tea is still the national drink in Britain, but at breakfast time in London many people drink a cup of white coffee or a cappuccino at a café. Because coffee breaks (descanso para el café) are not very long, people often drink them walking to the office from a paper cup. Most (la mayoria) people eat a bowl of cereal before they leave the house. If they have breakfast in a café, a popular choice (selección) is bacon, eggs and sausage, with  lots of toast and butter.

     
 

A Quick Lunch

Most working people have an hour for their lunch, which for many people consists of a sandwich. In Central London you will find cafés and takeaways (tienda de comida para llevar) on every street that serve an incredible variety of tasty (sabrosos) sandwiches. Many people find time for a pub lunch at least once a week. This can be a roast beef sandwich and salad or perhaps a plate of chilli, and a pint of beer. Bread, cheese and pickles (encurtidos) is commonly known as a ploughman’s lunch (comida de labrador).

 

The London Pub

Like chain restaurants, chain pubs with also dominate Britain’s towns and cities. When you go to London, look in a guidebook for authentic pubs with character. These are the best places to find good quality beer and pub grub.(comida) In these pubs the landlord (casero) knows the names of the locals (clientes habituales) and the atmosphere is usually very friendly. Learn how to order “a couple of pints of bitter and a double Scotch” and you will impress the barmaid! (camarera) If you leave a tip, (propina) say “and one for yourself” and she will take about thirty pence.

        

Indian Restaurants

Since the British colonized India, they have been addicted to Indian cuisine A classic Friday night with friends includes a visit to an Indian restaurant which are open late, and are ideal places to go after the pub, when the beer has made you hungry. Every year there are more and more excellent restaurants serving regional Indian dishes. Here you will find succulent alternatives to the classic chicken tikka masala and white rice.

You might decide you want to be more direct and so be sure that your interest in the person is understood. Some people don’t respond very well to this approach (acercamiento) but others prefer it. Some people prefer to flirt by going directly for the target.(objetivo) Instead of focusing on the clothes someone is wearing, they go right for the person’s physical qualities they find so attractive. “You have beautiful hands. Wonderful and Terrible Christmas Presents

I Have a Dream...

El sueño de Martin Luther King, Jr. era que sus cuatro hijos pudiesen vivir un día en una nación que no los juzgara por el color de su piel. Pero ,¿qué más sabes acerca de MLK  ? Practica tu inglés y descubre algo más acerca de este personaje que ya es leyenda.

 Early life

 King was born in 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. His father, Martin Luther King, Sr., was pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church and encouraged (animó, alentó ) his son to go into the ministry.(hacerse clérigo ) King entered college when he was only fifteen and received a degree in sociology in 1948. King, realising that the ministry would  be a good platform from which to address social issues (tratar temas sociales) , became a minister that same year.

King went on to study theology, first in Pennsylvania and then in Massachusetts, and received a doctorate from Boston University. In Boston he met and married Coretta Scott, a music student from Alabama. The couple lived in Montgomery, Alabama, and King became pastor of a local church there in 1954. In Montgomery, King started on the road to becoming the nation’s most prominent leader in the fight for civil rights.

The Civil Rights Movement

 In 1860, there were about 4 million slaves (esclavos) , many of them from Africa, living in the South of the United States. They were working in the region’s agricultural industries. Slavery was abolished in the U.S. following the American Civil War (1861-1865) but discrimination still existed. The slaves were freed (liberados)  but blacks were generally not treated as equals. In some Southern states, laws restricted blacks’ use of public services. For example, blacks sometimes were obligated to sit at the back of a bus and there were many “whites only” restaurants and hotels that did not serve blacks. The blacks did not have the same opportunities as whites when looking for work or housing.(vivienda)  Blacks who challenged (desafiaban)  the social structure of the whites were sometimes treated unfairly by the police or, in some cases, lynched by angry mobs.(turba,grupos de gente) A political solution seemed out of reach as blacks didn’t have the right to vote in many areas.

Judith Ortiz, alumna de Home English, nos cuenta su experiencia

Tenemos el placer de presentaros a Judith Ortiz, alumna de los cursos de inglés y alemán en Home English. Judith, catalana residente en Girona, tiene consejos de sobra para todos los que queráis estudiar idiomas a distancia, ¡es toda una experta en Home English! Esto es lo que nos cuenta :)

  ¿Cómo te definirías en una frase?

Una persona dinámica, entusiasta, alegre, exigente en mis metas, con la que te reirás un buen rato...

Para todos aquellos que no te conozcan, ¡cuéntanos un poquito sobre ti!

Me gustan los perros, especialmente mis dos amores quienes además de ser fieles y tremendamente bonachones, me divierto mucho con ellos adiestrándoles y saliendo a pasear por la montaña. Me gusta el gimnasio, voy  todos los días  y entreno al máximo,  la aviación me apasiona y un requisito de la aviación son los idiomas que, además de gustarme, pronto serán  obligatorios para cualquier trabajo.

Y como a la mayoría de personas, me encanta viajar y experimentar cosas nuevas.

Desde tu pasión por los perros hasta la aviación… ¡qué variedad! Entonces, ¿dónde te gustaría trabajar en el futuro?

Como la experiencia de trabajar con perros ya la tengo, (buenísima por cierto), me gustaría mucho entrar en la aviación, que es por esto que me estoy preparando, ya tengo el titulo de azafata y de Técnico en Operaciones Aeroportuarias, así que voy a por el trabajo...   Espero conseguirlo.

Los idiomas se pueden aprender estudiando y también practicando… ¿Tienes pensado irte al extranjero para mejorar la conversación y la escucha?

Sí, he estado de vacaciones en Londres donde pude poner en práctica mis conocimientos de inglés y, al ver que no tenía problemas y que me espabilaba tremendamente bien, decidí dar un paso más adelante en mis estudios, seguir avanzando con el nivel y además la ciudad me gustó tanto que estoy intentando irme para allá, de hecho estoy en lista de espera para irme  a trabajar y aprender la cultura y desde luego mejorar el idioma.

Como consejo, después de terminar vuestro curso de inglés, iros unos días a Inglaterra a experimentar... Os sorprenderéis vosotros mismos y volveréis motivados para emprender un nuevo curso.

Está claro que el inglés es la lengua universal  pero… ¿por qué alemán y no otro segundo idioma?

En mi caso porque lo he enfocado a mi futuro profesional, quiero ser azafata de vuelo y en aviación, además de necesitar un nivel de inglés casi nativo, hay muchas más posibilidades si tienes más idiomas, en mi caso alemán porque mi meta es ser azafata de Lufthansa, y necesito un nivel de esta lengua igual que de inglés, aunque no descarto otros idiomas...

¿Te gusta más un idioma que otro?

Me gustan varios idiomas;  inglés, alemán, francés, ruso, italiano, nórdicos... y latín, si tuviera que elegir los tres que más me gustan: Inglés, Latín y Alemán.

¿Cómo te está resultando estudiar una lengua extranjera a distancia?

Mi experiencia con los cursos a distancia es muy positiva, no le veo ningún contra... Si durante el estudio te surgen dudas o no entiendes algo que se te explica, contactas con tu profesor y te resuelve lo que sea... Además te pones el día y a la hora que quieras; si un día no quieres no estudias, pero tampoco se puede dejarlo todo y ponerse las pilas a último momento, es algo que debe ser progresivo, un poquito cada día y sin quererse comer el mundo en un día... Poco a poco y bien adquirido.

¿En qué momento del día y en qué lugar te gusta más estudiar?

A mí me gusta estudiar por las mañanas después del paseo de mis perros y de terminar las tareas de casa, me pongo en mi habitación-despacho, (decorado al estilo Londres, para entrar en ambiente) unas 4 horitas, luego me voy al gimnasio a despejarme un rato y por las tardes  me pongo un ratito en el campus con algún link de videos o canciones  porque es otra manera de aprender.

 Hay que reconocer que sentirse a gusto en el espacio donde se va estudiar es muy importante, alguna vez me he puesto en el comedor sentada en el sofá y en la mesita y esos exámenes me han salido con menor nota....

¿Qué tal está siendo la relación con tu Personal Teacher?

Uy, no tengo el placer de conocerle face to face, pero en los años que hace que somos profesor-alumna, puedo decir que es una bellísima persona, como si le conociera de hace años, me encanta y estoy súper contenta, no lo cambio ni loca. Alguna vez ha estado de vacaciones y me ha corregido un examen otro profesor, y aunque no tengo nada en contra de los demás, he pedido que me lo corrigiera mi profesor, que no me importaba esperar el tiempo que hiciera falta pero que quería mi profe... Hay un feeling muy positivo.

¿Cómo definirías tu experiencia en general con Home English?

Fantástica, fácil, eficaz, sencilla, profesional, completa... Amazing!

¿Qué les dirías a aquellas personas que aun no conocen Home English como alumnos?

Si tienen dudas tipo: "Es que eso de no tener el profesor....." "es que eso de hacerlo por internet, yo no me aclaro mucho con las tecnologías..."

... Puedo garantizar que: si tienes dudas sobre el temario del curso, tu profesor trabaja un montón de horas en las que le puedes llamar y te atenderá al momento o puedes enviar tus dudas por mail y en 24-48 horas tienes tus respuestas.

En cuanto a los que somos torpes con las nuevas tecnologías (yo la primera), debo decir que el campus es todo muy sencillo de manejar, está todo muy ordenado, y en un click estás donde quieras: consultas, exámenes, contenidos gramaticales, videos, podcast,...

Exámenes sencillos de completar y las correcciones del profesor son súper claras.

Home English tiene el curso de inglés muy completo con mucho material extra  para todos los niveles de inglés, puedo decir que la persona que hace el curso con Home English sale preparada para un examen oficial sin haber asistido a clases presenciales.
